How to Load a Stanley “Sharpshooter” Staple Gun

It’s funny how the little things can really trip you up.  I’d like to think I’m a pretty smart guy but I got a Stanley TR250 “Sharpshooter” staple gun today and I must have spent 10 minutes figuring out how to load the damn staples in it.  Unlike most staple guns I have used before, the staples don’t ride in on the sliding rail but are dropped right into the slot on the bottom of the stapler (while the slide rail is out.)  Of course the instruction sheet says nothing on loading the stupid thing.  (Thanks Stanley…)  So if you have any of the Sharpshooter staple guns, there you go.  Maybe I’ll save someone a few minutes of aggravation.

Royal Society: 350 Years of Scientific Publishing

A new website by the Royal Society in Britain allows you to explore 350 years of scientific papers and accomplishments via an interactive timeline.  Even more interestingly, the actual papers are linked from the event details.  For example, you can read Benjamin Franklin’s letter regarding his famous kite experiment.

Being a “science guy” I think this site could definitely occupy some serious time on my part.  If you have any interest in science or history, you need to check it out.

Happy Birthday Firefox

Firefox, my favorite web browser, turned 5 years old.  I started using it when it was known as Firebird although there was one earlier name Phoenix.  Anyway, ars technica has a glimpse back at their original coverage.  Check it out.

Secure deletion of files (Linux) with Gnome Integration

I ran across a very nice straightforward article showing how to setup secure file deletion in Linux with full Gnome/Nautilus integration.  You may be familiar with the command-line “shred” utility but you may not know how to get that to be an option when “right-clicking.”  It’s a useful trick.

Not just whistling Orwell…

Yes, I’m still alive–just been really busy…

So, I ran across a disturbing article a few days ago.  Many people worried about encroachment on our basic liberties, including myself, tend to throw around the term Orwellian a lot.  A new proposal in the UK though takes it to a new level.  They actually want to put 24/7 video surveillance inside the homes of the “worst” families.  All that’s missing is the monitor showing the face of Big Brother.  The UK has become the surveillance society but seriously, what the hell?

The history of Unix

With the approaching 40th birthday of the Unix operating system (August), ComputerWorld has an interesting feature on its history.  Unix has been a powerful force in computing in both a practical and philosophical way.  (Not to mention a very big part of my IT career.)  Very interesting reading.

Something’s a little off…

Anyone see a problem with this infobox of job postings on the Linux Today homepage?
